Düren Coffee Roastery was born out of a simple frustration: great coffee was hard to find in the Rhineland outside of the big cities. We set out to change that.
Our roastery sits in a converted warehouse on the edge of Düren’s old town. Every morning we pull samples from the previous day’s roasts, cup them against our flavour reference sheets, and adjust the profile for the next batch. This obsessive attention to consistency is what keeps our regulars coming back week after week.
**Our sourcing philosophy**
We work directly with fewer than twelve farming families and cooperatives, most of them in Ethiopia, Colombia and Guatemala. Direct trade is more than a marketing buzzword for us — it means we pay above-market prices, visit the farms at least once a year, and share cupping notes with the producers so they can refine their processing too.
Our current lineup includes:
– *Ethiopia Guji Natural* — dried on raised beds, bursting with blueberry and jasmine. A natural process that rewards patience.
– *Colombia Huila Washed* — crisp malic acidity, apple and nectarine, a long clean finish. Perfect for filter.
– *Guatemala Antigua SHB* — structured, chocolatey, with a brown-sugar sweetness that makes it our most popular espresso origin.
**The roasting process**
We roast on a 15 kg Giesen W15A drum roaster. Profiles are developed in Cropster and logged every roast so we can reproduce them exactly. Light roasting is our default because we believe it lets the origin character speak. You will not find a French Roast in our shop.
Roast-to-order means your bag goes on the roaster within 48 hours of your order. We ship across Germany via DHL with compostable kraft packaging and a one-way CO₂ valve so the beans off-gas without going stale.
**Community and education**
Every second Saturday of the month we host a public cupping at the roastery. No experience needed — just curiosity. We walk you through the SCAA cupping protocol, taste five or six coffees blind, and compare notes. Many of our wholesale customers first found us at one of these events.
We also run a monthly newsletter with harvest updates, brew guides and the occasional recipe. Subscribe on our website to stay in the loop.
If you have a café, restaurant or office and are thinking about switching to a local specialty roaster, drop us a line on the Contact page. We are always happy to talk green coffee, offer a tasting box, or discuss a supply arrangement that works for both sides.
